What is A Far-Infrared Sauna?

A far-infrared sauna session is the ideal therapy to soothe aches and pains, eliminate toxins and de-stress from everyday life. Light technology on the infrared spectrum penetrates deeper into the body, cleansing the tissues much more effectively than traditional steam and hot rock saunas. The heat has a host of healing benefits, including purging heavy metals, essentially taking pressure off the internal detoxification pathways and organs.

There is a subtle yet significant difference between the two types of sauna that are used today. Notably, an infrared sauna, which is used in therapy treatments, has its predominant heat source as light, rather than hot coal. Infrared sauna treatments may be available at different levels; near, middle, and far. These different levels represent the different sizes in infrared wavelengths and refer to the intensity of the treatment. Far Infra-red (FIR) heat is not ultraviolet radiation but a narrow band of energy within the 5 to 15 micron level. This type of energy travels 40 – 45 mm deep into the body.

Far-infrared levels are used primarily for detoxification purposes and can promote physiological adaptations that result in increased endurance, easier acquisition of muscle mass, and a general increased capacity for stress tolerance. Studies show the composition of chemicals found in the sweat during an infrared sauna is quite different from that produced by a steam bath, traditional steam/hot rock sauna, or exercise. The sweat of people using a far infrared sauna will not only contain water but will also contain cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins, heavy metals (such as mercury, aluminium, and arsenic), nicotine, sulfuric acid, ammonia, and other undesirable elements. Normal sweat produced by other methods, including exercise, is mostly water and sodium chloride (salt).

Payment:

It is best to pay at the time of your booking, either online, over the phone or at the counter. An invoice will be emailed to you and although we do not refund we will happily reschedule an appointment for you.

3. How to Prepare

  • If it’s your first sauna experience, try to arrive 5-10 mins early so we have the opportunity to welcome you and talk you through your first session.
  • It’s important to make sure you are well hydrated before and after any sauna session for maximum benefit and detoxification. An hour before your sauna try to drink at least 500mls of good quality filtered water.
  • If you can, limit the amount of personal care products you put on before a session. Clean skin will make it easier for your body to cleanse and clear out all the toxins and impurities.
  • Feel free to bring some reading material or music to enjoy during your session. The sauna is also preloaded with relaxation music, guided meditations and podcasts for your convenience.
  • Be prepared to get hot, sweaty and enjoy some deep cleansing relaxation.

What to expect

The sauna is located within its own private therapy room which will be stocked with a robe, towel and water for your personal use.

Prior to your arrival the sauna will be preheated to 65 degrees celsius for a session duration of 45 minutes.

We recommend you enter the sauna undressed or with minimal garments (ie. swimwear or cotton underwear). For hygiene purposes, we ask that you sit on a towel for the duration of your session.

During your session you have the option to listen to relaxation music, guided meditations and podcasts which can be played through the internal speakers. The sauna has also been fitted with light therapy and we encourage you to experiment with the different colours during your session.

For maximum benefit we recommend a sauna session of 65 degrees celsius for 45 mins, however if you need to take a break you are able to enter and exit the sauna as many times as you like during the session.

Shower, toilet and change room facilities are available to freshen up after your session.

After your Sauna

  1. Brush your skin, including the face and scalp, with a body brush or loafer, if you have one.
  2. If it is possible to shower, do so as soon as you get out in order to wash off any lingering toxins. Ideally, the shower should be cool to warm but preferably not hot (if you can’t shower, just wipe yourself down with a wet towel).
  3. Ideally, avoid using any soap, shampoo or moisturiser after your sauna as it can block up the lovely open pores of the skin and stop the post-sauna detox effect.
  4. Drink another 500ml of water over 10-30 minutes.
  5. Resting for 10-30 minutes after your sauna is ideal. It helps transition the body back to homeostasis (balance) and decreases the chance of light-headedness or fatigue later in the day.
  6. You may need to replace vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids and calcium, when you first start doing sauna therapy. See your health care professional for further information and testing.
  7. Many health practitioners recommend taking kelp after a sauna to provide electrolyte and trace mineral replacement as well as assistance for internal detoxification processes.
